I’m thinking about moving adlads off wordpress.com and onto someplace where we can play with the look and feel a little bit more and make it more ‘custom’. So I’m facing the questions of whether to jump to Typepad, Movable Type etc etc. Where do you guys host your blogs and what would you recommend? We’ve already got the domain name so moving to self-hosting is definitely a route we’d consider. All advice and tips welcome.

I’m currently comparing blog platforms by building blogs on WordPress.com, TypePad, and SquareSpace.
You can see a running commentary of “BlogCastGirl’s 2008 Blog Platform Challenge,” my experience at the three different sites, starting with http://blogcastgirl.wordpress.com. Click on the “Comparing Blogs Page” (http://blogcastgirl.wordpress.com/blog-challenge/) for an index of posts that guide you through all three platforms.
For ease of use, I like TypePad.
> It has a great control panel that lays out the major components of a blog in an easy-to-understand manner.
> It has a clean look and feel.
> It is pre-packaged with software, hosting, and support together. I would prefer a “blog-in-a-box” over buying each service separately, plus a tech to ride herd. This is why Squarespace is on my list.
> Typepad doesn’t have horizontal navigation for pages that I have found. I sent in a question to support to find out if I can get it.
For user navigation, I like WordPress.
> People seem to find it first. I have only had comments on this site, none of the others.
> It has horizontal navigation, which enables me to create a “blogsite” with static pages.
> I checked it on an optimization validator and it had no errors, TypePad had 15, and Squarespace had 8.
> I am crossing my fingers that upgrading to WordPress.org would enable me to keep the things that I like while customizing and monetizing in the long-run.
At the point, my blogs are demos, and lack the functionality that you currently have. My next foray is to build a blog on WordPress.org already pre-installed at a hosting service.
By the way, Movable Type isn’t on my list (a) because it is a version of TypePad, and (b) word has it that it is difficult to use.
I’m curious to see what others have to say to your question.
I have my own http://www.example.com website which is great because you get to own the website outright and it is easier to do SEO on. More control. I use WordPress which is great. I found someone to host it in the UK who are good value and really helpful in getting you going with WordPress.
I also have a second blog hosted on http://www.blogger.com. Blogger.com is really easy to use (like all blogger platforms there are positives and negatives). It is free. It never seems to go down. Hassle-free.
Typepad looks good though but I believe you have to pay for it right?
Thanks for your input guys..
Eamon yeah you gotta pay for Typepad dude, I’m gonna have a think about where to take AdLads cause wordpress ain’t cutting it now in terms of how I want it to look.
